The Honda Pilot is a popular SUV known for its spacious interior and sleek design. However, over the years, some models have had their share of problems more than others.
I’ve seen many Honda Pilots roll through my local repair shop. There are issues.
Common Problems with the Honda Pilot
The TLDR: if it’s a trouble free SUV that you want, maybe the Pilot isn’t it. For example, check out my overview of 2021 Acura RDX problems. Those are nothing compared to the following:
Interior Accessories Issues
- Most Common Problem: Many owners complain about interior accessories failing after about 43,000 miles.
- Worst Years: 2003, 2004, and 2019 models are the most affected.
- Common Complaints:
- Ignition switch issues
- Infotainment system freezing
- Interior lights shorting out
- Clock resetting to central time
- Chrome peeling on door handles
Airbag Problems
- Defective Airbags: Many 2016-present models have had recalls due to faulty Takata airbags.
- Common Issue: The airbag light often stays on because of glitches in the system.
Fuel System Problems
- Clogged Fuel Injectors: This can make the engine run rough and lead to misfires.
- Inspection Needed: If you notice rough running, get it checked to avoid engine damage.
Transmission Issues
- Common Symptoms: Drivers report stuttering, jerking, and rough rides.
- Notable Year: The 2005 model is known for fluid leaks due to a faulty cooler.
Brake Problems
- Warped Rotors: Many drivers experience vibrations when braking, especially in 2003 and 2004 models.
- Solution: Replace the faulty brake pads and rotors.
Soy Wiring Issues
- Wiring decay: Honda uses soy-based materials for wiring, which can disconnect easily.
- Fix: Usually requires replacing the wiring harness.
It’s true! Some Asian car manufacturers use soy based wiring material. It usually problematic over the long term , as you may have read about in my overview of Hyundai Tucson problems.
Excessive Oil Consumption
- Notable Year: The 2009 model is known for burning too much oil. Note that this is also a general Honda CR-V problem (of the same generation) as well. It runs in the family I guess.
Faulty Low Beam Lights
- Common Issue: Overheated wiring harnesses can lead to melted connectors in 2003-2008 and 2010-2013 models.
Differential Fluid Breakdown
- Common Years: 2003-2012 and 2015 models may experience this.
- Symptoms: Loud noises from the rear axle; requires fluid change to avoid damage.
EGR and IAC Valve Failures
- EGR Valve Issues: Common in 2003-2017 models, leading to rough idling.
- IAC Valve Problems: Affects 2003-2016 models, causing engine stalling.
As a basis for comparison, problems with the pilot are generally worse than problems with the HR-V (one of the best selling Honda’s on the market).
Is the Honda Pilot Reliable?
Overall, I’m of the opinion that the Honda Pilot is generally reliable. It has a rating of 3.5 out of 5 for reliability, with lower repair costs compared to other Honda vehicles.
Honda Pilots also depreciate less than other SUVs, making them a good choice for resale value. They also offer good fuel efficiency, averaging 21-23 mpg.
The Most Reliable Model Year
The 2015 Honda Pilot stands out as the most reliable model. It has a high reliability rating of 4.9 and is recommended by 99% of owners.
While the 2015 model has had a few recalls, it remains a strong choice for those looking for a dependable SUV.
