The list of 2016 GMC Terrain problems is kinda long (and frustrating)

The 2016 GMC Terrain is something that I’ve got a love / hate relationship with. On one hand, parts for it are cheap and it’s fairly easy to repair. On the other hand, they’re becoming more and more unreliable with each passing year.

This mid-size SUV has its strengths, but it also has several issues that potential buyers should be aware of.

Common Problems

1. Engine Issues

One of the most significant complaints from 2016 GMC Terrain owners revolves around engine problems:

  • Power Loss: Many drivers report experiencing a loss of power while driving. This can be particularly concerning when trying to merge onto highways or navigate busy streets.
  • Stalling: Some vehicles may stall unexpectedly, which can be dangerous if it happens in traffic.
  • Fuel Consumption: Drivers have noticed that their Terrains consume more fuel than expected, leading to higher gas expenses.
  • Engine Won’t Turn Off: In some cases, the engine may continue running even after the key has been removed from the ignition. Owners have had to repeatedly remove and reinsert the key to turn off the engine.
  • Delayed Acceleration: The vehicle may not respond promptly when the accelerator is pressed, which is potentially dangerous.
  • Unusual Noises: Some drivers have reported loud popping or exploding sounds while driving, followed by smoke coming from the engine. This is a serious problem that requires immediate attention. Like, duh…

2. StabiliTrak System Problems

The Terrain is equipped with an electronic stability control system called StabiliTrak. While this system is designed to enhance safety, many owners have reported issues:

  • Common Symptoms:
    • Jerking Movements: The vehicle may jerk unexpectedly, making it difficult to control.
    • Stalling or Shutting Down: The vehicle may stall or shut down without warning.
    • Poor Acceleration: Drivers may experience sluggish acceleration, which can be frustrating and dangerous.
  • Warning Lights: If you see the StabiliTrak light or check engine light come on, it’s essential to get the vehicle checked by a reputable mechanic as soon as possible. Ignoring these warning lights can lead to more significant issues down the road.

3. Airbag Malfunctions

Some owners have reported serious airbag issues:

  • Failure to deploy: Some airbags may fail to deploy in the event of a crash, putting passengers at risk of injury or death.
  • No Warning: Many drivers do not receive any alerts indicating an airbag problem until it’s too late. Regular inspections are essential to ensure that the airbag system is functioning correctly.

4. Windshield Wiper Problems

Broken (non-functioning) windshield wipers are the most common problem I see with the 2016 GMC Terrain.

  • Wipers Stop Working: Some drivers report that their windshield wipers fail during heavy rain, significantly reducing visibility.
  • Possible Causes:
    • Broken Wiper Motor
    • Fuse Issues
    • Defective Parts (which requires digging into – which can be expensive)

5. Transmission Troubles

Would it be a General Motors vehicle without the occasional transmission problem?

  • Signs of Trouble:
    • Stalling: The vehicle may stall during shifts.
    • Lagging: You may notice delays when accelerating.
    • Hard Shifting: The transmission may shift roughly, making for a jerky ride.
  • Costly Repairs: Some owners have had to replace their transmissions multiple times. Note that there are few remaining 2016 Terrain’s with valid warranty coverage, so this is an expense that will come directly out of your pocket.

Minor Issues

In addition to the major problems listed above, there are two minor issues that seem to affect every vehicle:

  • Seat Belt Issues: Some seat belts may not retract properly, which can be a safety concern.
  • Brake Problems: There have been many reports of issues with the brakes (squeaking, vibrating / pulsing, and loss of stopping power).

Is the 2016 GMC Terrain Reliable?

Despite its issues, the 2016 GMC Terrain can still be a reliable vehicle with proper maintenance. Without that proper maintenance, it’ll be just as frustrating as dealing with 2018 Chevrolet Silverado problems (which are annoying – and expensive – AF).

  • Overall Rating: The Terrain has a mixed reliability score.
    • RepairPal: 3.5/5
    • JD Power: 87/100
    • KBB: 4.2/5
  • Safety Ratings: The IIHS has named the 2016 Terrain a Top Safety Pick, indicating it performs well in crash tests.
  • Longevity: With proper care, I’m of the opinion that the 2016 GMC Terrain can last up to 20 years or 300,000 miles. Regular maintenance is key to achieving this longevity though – so don’t expect it to last that long unless you’re doing your best to take care of it.

Recalls

The 2016 GMC Terrain has been subject to a couple of recalls:

  • Tire Label Recall: On June 21, 2016, a recall was issued due to incorrect tire information on labels. This could lead to improper tire inflation, increasing crash risks. Affected vehicles had their labels replaced at no cost to owners.
  • Headlight Glare Recall: On March 8, 2022, another recall was announced due to headlights that could cause glare for other drivers. This issue reduces visibility and increases the risk of accidents. General Motors has contacted affected owners via email.

Conclusion

The 2016 GMC Terrain has its share of problems, particularly concerning the engine, StabiliTrak system, and airbag functionality. However, it can still be a reliable vehicle with proper maintenance and care.

Finding one that has been properly maintained is becoming more difficult though – so be very (very) careful.

Before buying one, make sure to have it thoroughly inspected by a mechanic. You’ve been warned!
