2015 Nissan Altima problems: annoying little electrical glitches galore

The 2015 Nissan Altima is a popular car known for good fuel economy, smooth ride, and lots of space. My customers generally have nothing but good things to say about them.

But it has some problems you should know about if you’re thinking about buying one.

Common Problems

I’ve worked on many different Altimas over the years. Despite all of the problems I’m about to list, it’s the electrical glitches that are the most common.

Transmission Issues

  • Main Problem: Many drivers report that the transmission won’t shift into gear sometimes.
  • Symptoms: Stuttering, hesitation, or even complete failure of the transmission.
  • Repair Cost: It currently costs between $3,000 and $5,000 to replace a transmission in a 2015 Altima. It just depends on where you get it (and how much your mechanic charges you).

Engine Problems

  • Stalling: Some drivers have experienced the engine stalling while driving. This is a potentially serious issue resulting from many possible part failures. The simple solution: replace the spark plugs (and hope for the best).
  • Starting Issues: The engine may turn over but not start. Again, it could be fouled spark plugs. If not, check the crankshaft sensor.
  • Check Engine Light: I can’t count the number of times that I’ve had a customer come to me in a 2015 Altima with a check engine light that ultimately resulted in no error codes. Sometimes it just comes on for no reason.

Steering Issues

  • Alignment: Many owners report excessive drifting in one direction or another while driving at highway speed. It’s usually the result of poor wheel alignment – which is something Altima’s of many model years are known for.
  • Stiff Steering: It can sometimes be hard to turn the steering wheel (especially when cold). Sometimes changing the power steering fluid is all that’s needed to get it working properly again.
  • Whining Noise: A loud noise may come from the steering system. I had a customer with this exact problem about a month ago. The problem was a bad power steering pump.

Oil Leaks

  • Cause: Poor seals between the oil filter and cooler can lead to oil leaks.
  • Symptoms: Low oil pressure and engine knocking sounds. That said, if you’re hearing knocking sounds, it’s probably too late. Damage to the engine has already been done.

Electrical Problems

  • Common Complaints: Issues with the backup camera, Bluetooth, and smart key.
  • Lights: Some owners have to replace headlights due to premature dimness (all headlights will dim over time).

Other Issues

  • Catalytic Converter: Can fail and cause engine damage.
  • Brakes: Some cars had recalls for loose brake caliper bolts.
  • Airbags: A faulty sensor may not detect a passenger, which can deactivate the airbag.
  • Hood Latch: Problems with the hood latch can cause the hood to fly open while driving.
  • Rear Door Latch: Lowering a window could cause the rear door to unlock and swing open.
  • A/C Problems: The 2015 Altima is notorious AC compressor failure.
  • Crankshaft Sensor: A faulty sensor can cause starting problems (as I described above).

Reliability of the 2015 Nissan Altima

Despite all of these problems, I consider the 2015 Altima to be a fairly reliable car. I certainly wouldn’t try to talk anyone out of buying one if they find a good deal.

  • Average Rating: The Altima is considered average in reliability compared to other midsize cars.
  • Repair Costs: The average repair cost is about $500 per year.
  • Major Repairs: There’s a 12% chance it will need major repairs, similar to other cars in its class.

Lifespan

  • How Long It Lasts: The Altima can last about 15-20 years or 200,000-300,000 miles if taken care of.
  • Major Repairs: Expect major repairs after reaching 200,000 miles.

I’ve seen Altima’s from the mid 2010’s as high as 800,000 miles (and still going strong). Maintenance is the key though – if you take care of it, it’ll last forever(ish).

Recalls

The 2015 Nissan Altima has had recalls for the following components:

  • Hood Latch: Could unexpectedly open while driving.
  • Fuel System: Improperly installed o-ring could leak fuel.
  • Airbag Sensor: Could misread the passenger seat as empty (and not deploy in an accident).
  • Brake Calipers: Loose bolts could reduce braking ability.
  • Rear Door Latch: A faulty latch could cause doors to open while driving.

For more information on recalls, you can check the NHTSA website.

Conclusion

The 2015 Altima has many good features – but is prone to some very serious problems. For the sake of comparison, I consider 2013 Toyota Camry problems to be worse.

If you’re thinking about buying one, take it to a trusted mechanic to inspect it for potential issues. And hidden damage!

Any one of these things that you can find in good condition is worth buying IMHO. They are very solid cars.
